Entry 88 – Unboxing a TRS Snake

The Small Change That Changed Everything

In a previous post, I talked about how converting a simple bridging shelf into a 19-inch rack unit turned out to be a complete game changer. Bringing all of my rack gear together in one place radically improved how my studio functioned. That single decision alone pushed the entire space forward in a way I couldn’t have fully anticipated at the time.

Every once in a while, something happens in a studio build that’s so transformative you genuinely can’t remember how you ever worked without it. This was one of those moments.

The Mixer That Wouldn’t Sit Still

Throughout much of this video series, I kept circling around one unresolved issue: where the mixer was going to live.

If you watched closely, you probably noticed that the mixer moved around more than just about anything else in the room. That wasn’t indecision—it was circumstance.

At the time, local music stores were in the middle of an audio cable shortage. The cables I needed were either unavailable or priced so high they felt almost comical. I mention this a few times in the series because it had a real impact on how the studio developed.

Because I didn’t have the correct cables, the mixer couldn’t go where it should have gone. Instead, it was forced into wherever the existing cable lengths would allow. Every placement worked, but none of them were ideal.

The Missing Piece Wasn’t Gear—It Was Cables

What I actually needed was simple:

  • Two 16–20 ft 1/4″ TRS snakes

That would allow the mixer to live on my main production desk while connecting cleanly to the rack unit across the room.

The problem?
The only snakes I could find locally were $250–$300 each. That meant roughly $600 just to put the mixer where it belonged.

At that point in my life, I still wasn’t much of an online shopper. But as part of this studio redesign, that habit had already started to change. So eventually, I did something I wouldn’t have done before—I went online.

The Purchase That Saved the Studio

On Amazon, I found exactly what I needed:

  • Two 20 ft 1/4″ TRS snakes
  • Under $100 each
  • Possibly as low as $60 per snake at the time

Those two cables didn’t just solve a problem—they saved the studio.

They allowed me to:

  • Place the mixer exactly where it should have been all along
  • Integrate it cleanly with the newly converted 19-inch rack
  • Establish a signal flow that actually made sense

Suddenly, everything felt intentional. Logical. Efficient. The mixer and rack gear stopped fighting the room and started working with it.

The Real Lesson

What struck me most about this experience is how small the solution was compared to the impact it had. It wasn’t a new piece of gear, a major renovation, or a flashy upgrade. It was just the right cables at the right time.

And yet, that single decision changed how the entire studio functioned.

A Question for Your Own Studio

So here’s a thought for the next time you’re standing in your own space:

  • What were the real game changers in your studio?
  • What decision—or seemingly minor purchase—completely shifted how you work?
  • Was it a piece of gear, a layout change, or something as simple as proper cabling?

Sometimes it’s the smallest, most unglamorous upgrades that quietly make the biggest difference.

If you can identify those moments, you’ll probably find they tell the real story of how your studio became what it is today.
