About Illustrious Sound

From the author and editor

Welcome, and thanks for stopping by.

Illustrious Sound is a small, independently published online magazine and video journal created for home studio enthusiasts—especially those just starting out, figuring things out, or simply enjoying the process of making music at home. Whether you’re a curious student, a weekend tinkerer, or someone rediscovering music later in life, this space is for you.

This isn’t a gear review site or a step-by-step tutorial blog. It’s a casual publication built to share the ups and downs, little puzzles, and occasional breakthroughs that come with creating music in your own space. Through short-form articles and video episodes, Illustrious Sound reminds you that figuring it out is part of the fun—and that you’re not the only one learning as you go.

Inside, you’ll find reflections on studio life, insights into creative routines, occasional deep dives into tools or techniques, and resources drawn straight from my own teaching. Some pieces are inspired by students, others by things I’ve had to troubleshoot myself—often becoming part of the video episodes or PDF issues that follow.

While I’m a full-time music educator and Royal Conservatory–certified piano and theory teacher, Illustrious Sound isn’t about me—it’s about you and your journey. This project is here to support exploration, share ideas, and celebrate the joy of learning how to make music at home.

Most posts and episodes are eventually collected into downloadable PDF issues, available in the Magazine Rack. These curated volumes help keep things organized and serve as a growing archive of learning and experimentation.

So whether you’re patching cables, adjusting mic placement, or starting your first DAW project—welcome. I hope you find something here that makes your next session a little smoother or a little more fun.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Magazine

Have a question about how the magazine works? Here are a few common answers to help you get started.

How often are issues published?

Issues are released up to six times a year, depending on what’s happening in the studio and what’s worth sharing. There’s no strict publishing schedule—when enough content has been created and curated, a new issue is released.

Can I contribute an article?

At this time, Illustrious Sound is a solo project—written, edited, and curated by one author. While submissions aren’t open, I always appreciate hearing what readers are working on and may include shared ideas or inspiration in future posts.

Are the PDF issues free to download?

Yes! Every issue is free to download from the Magazine Rack. No sign-up required—just click and enjoy.

Who is Illustrious Sound for?

This magazine is for home studio enthusiasts, students, and anyone who enjoys making music at home—whether you’re learning the ropes, experimenting with gear, or just exploring what’s possible in your own creative space.

How is this connected to Bach To Basics Inc.?

Illustrious Sound is a division of Bach To Basics Inc., a music education company founded by Royal Conservatory–certified piano and theory teacher (that’s me), Trevor Baron. The magazine is one of several creative projects designed to support students, music teachers, and home studio explorers alike.

Are the videos part of the magazine or a separate project?

The videos are part of the same project as the magazine. They serve as a video journal that complements the written content. Some episodes are expanded on in the magazine, while others stand alone. Everything is connected by a shared goal: exploring real-life music-making in a home studio.

Where can I watch the episodes?

All episodes are available on the Episode Guide page, organized by season. You can also find them in the Blog and Tutorials sections, depending on the topic.

Are the video tutorials or more like vlogs?

Yes, the videos are more like a studio vlog or journal. While some episodes include minor tutorial content, most are not detailed, step-by-step guides. The Tutorials section simply organizes the episodes into topics that touch on a particular concept or piece of gear—so if you’re looking for something more general, it might help spark ideas or give you a bit of inspiration. But everything stays informal, real-world, and part of the same ongoing studio journey.

Do I need a YouTube account to watch the episodes?

Nope! You can watch directly from the Episode Guide page—no login or account required.
